Questing 101
From RoH Wiki
Aside from fighting monsters, another great pastime in the world of Derlith is questing. Many rewards come from completing quests such as armor, experience, and even new spells, all of which are usually unattainable by killing monsters, and are usually worth the time invested. Provided are some tips about getting started from Plu the Veteran Explorer:
- Picking a quest line: While perms can be killed for experience, may perms are also involved in a quest line. Talking to perms will usually provide a hint about what they are looking for. These jobs range from retrieving an item to assassinating the town leader; it is up to you to gauge the difficulty of the quest and whether or not you can complete it.
- Getting the most out of perms: Generally, the best thing to do when you come across a perm is to <talk> to it first. Once the dialogue is initiated, there are a few ways you can try to gain more information about a quest. This is best portrayed in the following example:
> talk bane
> Bane the Flamboyant Unicorn Lover says to you, "I've got a fantastic job for you! Do you want to help me?"
Now, there are quite a few ways you could approach this statement. The first way is to ask the perm about keywords used in the sentence.
> ask Bane fantastic
> Bane the Flamboyant Unicorn Lover shrugs. <-- this means invalid keyword
> ask bane job
>Bane the Flamboyant Unicorn Lover says to you, "Yar! My pet unicorn, Shimmer, has been craving Sindra's famous cookies but a big bad bully is has stolen them from her kitchen *cry* Are you still up for the job?"
Note that sometimes perms are looking for a yes or no answer to continue with the dialogue. Especially if they end their statement with a question like the situation here.
> talk bane yes
> Bane the Flamboyant Unicorn Lover says to you, "*squeal* I knew you'd help me! Now head over to Breakwater and get those cookies back from Darsk. You're the greatest! *hug*"
Finally, there are VERY rare occasions where the perm might not accept any of these keywords and instead, wants a full statement such as what kind of job
- Figuring out where to go: In the example above, Bane directs you to Breakwater. Sometimes, you aren't so lucky and things aren't as straightforward. But perms will always provide hints that make things possible to figure out with some good ol' fashioned thinking. For instance, the dwarves of Ironguard are displeased with the orcs. They want to you slay their war commanders, but they don't tell you exactly where to go. Yet, based on some basic knowledge of the game, you can decide to start searching through the Firedrake Mountains since this is where orcs live.
Onto tips on exploring.
